2010 Multicultural Leadership

In March, New Detroit will welcome the 14th annual group of area leaders into our Multicultural Leadership Series (MLS). Over the years our Multicultural Leadership Series has educated and empowered community leaders to effect change that has enhanced positive race relations throughout this region. MLS is a learning experience that offers the opportunity for participants to immerse themselves into the culture of metro Detroit’s African American, Arab, Asian, Chaldean, Latino and Native American communities.

More than 600 leaders in metropolitan Detroit have benefited from the knowledge gained from this experience. Candidates for the 2010 Multicultural Leadership Series can submit an application directly on-line by accessing the appropriate link below.

Focus On Education

New Detroit in partnership with the Detroit Parent Network has created a newsletter intended to inform parents, caregivers, students and stakeholders about issues in education.

William S. Taubman named New Detroit Board Chair

William S. Taubman was elected chair of the board of trustees of New Detroit, Inc., the nonprofit race relations coalition, at its annual meeting on January 21, 2010.

Taubman, the chief operating officer of Taubman Centers, Inc., succeeds John Rakolta, Jr., CEO of Walbridge, who has served as chair for the past seven years.

“New Detroit plays a critical role in fostering honest communication in our community across social, economic and political divides,” Taubman said. “To fully resolve the economic challenges in this region we must address issues raised by race. That is why the work New Detroit does is essential to the community’s ability to move forward in a productive and efficient way for all of its citizens. John Rakolta has done a tremendous job in addressing these issues as chair and I am honored to be succeeding him.”

“New Detroit’s success depends on the willingness of community leaders like Mr. Taubman to step forward to address these critical issues,” said New Detroit President and CEO Shirley Stancato. “He joins a distinguished list of leaders in this community who have recognized the critical importance of this mission and who have stepped forward to take a leadership role.”

Taubman, who is New Detroit’s 26th chair, joined Taubman Centers, Inc. in 1986 from Oppenheimer & Co., Inc. in New York, where he was a financial analyst specializing in mergers and acquisitions. He is a graduate of Brown University, where he received a bachelor's degree in Philosophy of Religion and Russian Studies. He also holds a master's degree in Philosophy from Corpus Christi College of Cambridge University, Cambridge, England.

In addition to the New Detroit board, Taubman serves on the board of trustees for the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and is a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT). He also serves on the board of Governors for the Museum of Arts & Design in New York.

Foreclosure Scams

Scammers are targeting people having trouble paying their mortgages. These so-called foreclosure rescue companies promise to stop foreclosure. But they're out to make a quick buck, and can turn a homeowner's distress into disaster.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, produced this video to encourage homeowners to get the help they need. It features the stories of real people taking action to save their home.

Census 2010

New Detroit is partnering with the US Census Bureau to get the word out regarding the 2010 Census. The Census count is critical for our metropolitan area. Among other things, an accurate count will ensure that we are properly represented in Congress and eligible for our fair share of government funding of the projects that sustain our community. New Detroit is concerned that all residents, without regard for race or economic status, are included as official residents of this region. Census results will impact our community.

Technical Assistance Available

Recruitment for eligible community and faith based organizations to participate in technical assistance opportunities is currently available. New Detroit’s goal is to offer targeted services to strengthen the organizational and programmatic infrastructure and efficiency of organizations serving the community. Elements of our program include revenue enhancement strategies and community engagement, along with leadership, organizational and program development.
